Supermarket shoppers finally learn trick to unlock trolleys without a coin - Irish Mirror Online

Nov 14, 2024

Many Irish supermarkets have a designated area where shoppers can grab a trolley for their grocery run. However, before rolling one away, a €1 or €2 coin, or at least a specific trolley token, will usually be needed to unlock it.

But with many of us increasingly relying on contactless payments like Apple Pay, it's become more common to head out with just our phones or cards, leaving coins behind. At one point or another, we have all felt the frustration of arriving for the big shop, only to find we don't have the necessary change to access a trolley.

Now, one woman has discovered a clever trick that offers shoppers a convenient alternative to rummaging for loose change. Instagram, user @lookinsidemygarden, has claimed that shoppers don't necessarily need a coin. In a post to her 150,000 Instagram followers, she shared her excitement: "I can't believe this worked."

She added: "Does anyone else get to the supermarket and forgot your coin? Or like me your special coin keyring sometimes doesn't work. So I thought I would try my luck and BOOM, we're in."

Delighted with the results, she joked: "Now I can fill my trolley with 26,000 snacks for another week of the holiday munches!"

In the short video, the woman can be seen using a standard key to access a trolley at Lidl. Over the clip, it also read: "No trolley coin, no problem..."

Since it was posted, it garnered thousands of likes and comments with many people eager to try it for themselves, Mirror UK reports. One suggested: "Use the key at the other end, it thinks it's a coin. Been doing this years." While another admitted: "I've always been scared to do that in case my key breaks." Then a third chimed in: "Nice! Have to remember this. My Aldi quarter lives in my cars cup holder. No one is allowed to touch it."

Someone else posted: "Omg! I'll try this, in the past I've had to go in the shop and ask if I can have a trolley!" And a fifth revealed: "Oh I wish I knew that before today."
