Key Food on Main Street in East Hartford

East Hartford residents now have a new grocery option, with the addition of the Key Food supermarket on Main Street.

The new store at 954 Main St. opened earlier this fall, and celebrated its grand opening Oct. 29 with local and state politicians, town officials and Key Food executives in attendance.

"East Hartford is very excited to have Key Food Supermarket join our business community on Main Street and they have already become an integral part of [the city], offering every day essentials, fresh produce and so much more," said mayor Michael Walsh in a statement. "We wish them the best of luck and success as they continue to establish their footprint in East Hartford."

The new Key Food International Supermarket, at about 14,000 square feet in size, offers a full-service meat department and a seafood department with both fresh and frozen options. A full-service deli includes Boar's Head products, catering services, bakery and prepared foods, and the store also offers a wide variety of international items, including a selection of Caribbean and Central-American products.

Key Food offers free delivery with a $100 purchase, and Instacart shopping is also available. Senior residents and firefighters are eligible for a 10 percent discount on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Founded in Brooklyn in 1937, Key Food Stores Co-Operative Inc. includes more than 335 grocery stores in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Florida. In addition to Key Food, these stores operate under various other brands including Food Universe, The Food Emporium, SuperFresh, Food Dynasty, and Gala Foods Supermarkets.

The East Hartford Key Food store follows the November 2020 opening of another full-service Key supermarket in Hartford, at 1250 Park Street in the city's Parkville neighborhood. Other Key and Gala Foods locations are in New Britain, Bridgeport and Norwalk.

Other new grocery stores debuting or expanding in Connecticut include Whole Foods (coming to Old Saybrook, South Windsor and Stamford); Wegmans (Norwalk) and Amazon Fresh (Brookfield and Westport.) Trader Joe's is also opening a new location in Glastonbury in 2023.
