New Davidson County clothing store aims to provide clothing for $6.99

Sep 16, 2023

WELCOME — $6.99 all the time. That's the mission, the business plan and the actual cost of all clothing, shoes and purses at the newest store set to open in Davidson County.

The Clothes Rack will hold its grand opening Saturday at 6240 Old Highway 52 in Welcome in a former dance studio.

"I have lived here a long time," said Joyce Hucks, who is opening the store with her husband, Richard. "I want to give people deals, and you won't have to drive to Winston-Salem to shop."

The Hucks are working to get signs up along the road and on the side of the building. Until then, it may be a little hard to find. It is on the side of the building in the back across the street from O'Reilly's and Family Dollar.

The Hucks buy truckloads of clothing and shoes from five main box stores.

"We can't say the names of the stores," Richard Hucks said. "We buy seasonal-changes clothing. Right now, we are buying winter stuff."

Last year at the end of summer, they purchased summer and spring clothing in anticipation of having it on hand when they opened this month. The store will open selling mostly spring and summer clothing.

"Our merchandise changes daily," he said. "If someone buys 100 pieces of clothing, we bring in 100 new pieces."

In fact, people who buy in higher volume will get an additional discount. If you buy four items, the price is $20 total instead of $27.96, which would be the total for four at $6.99 each. Every purchase in multiples of four gets the discount.

The clothing and shoes include men's, women's and children's items. On Tuesday before the grand opening there were items made by Chaps, Wrangler, Champion, Russell Athletic, George and more. Adult clothing goes from extra small to 5X.

In addition, there are socks, undershirts, bras, swimsuits and purses.

Payment will be by debit or credit card only. No cash or checks will be accepted.

Joyce Hucks said she has wanted to open a clothing store for many years in the Welcome community. The small, unincorporated area of the county does not have many options for clothing except a few items sold at the Dollar General. The only other clothing store moved to Arcadia in 2022.

"Every woman wants a boutique," Richard Hucks said in explaining why his wife wanted to open a clothing store. "They get free clothing."

"I get to go through boxes first," she said. "It's like Christmas every day. And with the cost of everything going up, everyone likes a deal."

The Huckses buy the clothing and shoes sight unseen. All they know is clothing is in the brown boxes and what season the clothes represent.

"Oh, we have a lot of Christmas items," she said. "We've already bought that. When that times comes later this year, I will have all your Christmas clothing. We have hundreds of Christmas pajamas we'll put out when it's time."

The Huckses have another type of bargain store they are opening soon in Myrtle Beach at 1000 S. Kings Highway. It will be a large bargain bin store where everything placed in the bins sells for a set price and the price decreases daily. Shoppers will rummage through the bins to find their bargain. Also, there will be liquidation items, such as patio furniture and appliances, that sell for below wholesale prices.

During the grand opening of The Clothes Rack, the family also will offer a free funnel cake to anyone who makes a purchase. A food truck will be set up in the parking lot outside of the store. Show your receipt from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. to receive a free funnel cake.

The store's hours will be 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday.
